| Abstract | The arrival of an innovation is always accompanied by major changes: arrival of new actors, of new models and the conversion or disappearance of the former actors who were unwilling or unable to evolve. Using the example of baclofen, the discovery of its efficacy in treating several addictions and its development through viral spreading, this article offers some reflections to enable healthcare users and their support groups to play a driving role in defining and implementing harm and risk reduction as well as overall public health strategies. The prerequisites to these proposals imply the acceptation and implementation of several new paradigms. It is also worth reminding the importance of fraternity, altruism and equality within the therapeutic alliance. In addition, the benevolent acceptance of this medical discovery could liberate potential profits, progress and societal advantages. However, these advances will be possible only through reconfiguring habits and shifting decision-making towards new forms of transparency, democracy and control. Thus, societal and cultural evolutions will naturally emerge. |
