| Abstract | A legend as a literary genre might be extremely challenging for a translator because it is strongly embedded in a cultural context. For this reason it is imperative that the translator retains in the translation not only the specific style characteristic of that text genre, but also that they place the legend in a cultural context. An element that heralds the legend and introduces the reader into the legend’s atmosphere is the title, whose translation might be difficult. The subject of the analysis conducted herein are German-Polish translations of titles of legends „Sagen der Grafschaft Glatz” by R. Kuhnau. The translations were performed by students of the Department of German Studies of the University of Wroclaw between 2010 and 2011. The objective hereof is an analysis of translations, assessment of mistakes and translation difficulties, as well as an attempt to make a typology of their causes. |
