| Abstract | FOSTERING READING AND WRITING IN EDUCATION STUDENTS In college, students have the need to interpret texts when studying but very often they do not have the opportunity of making their own material choice and discussing within a group their different points of view, a scenario which is most likely to hinder their own willingness to read by choice to expand their own knowledge. With the objective of fostering meaningful reading and writing at college level a study was done with a group of thirty students enrolled in the last two years of the Basic Integral Education Program at the Universidad de Los Andes. The specifi c objectives were: 1. to encourage voluntary reading and different written text production, 2. to provide better tools for the comprehension and analysis of academic texts, and 3. emphasize the relation reading-discussing-writing. The students read a variety of the text of their own choice, increased their knowledge and produced expositive and argumentative texts. |
