| Abstract | This article aims to examine how the theme “global warming” is treated in high school Geography textbooks, which are being or have been used in the cities of Marechal Cândido Rondon and Santa Helena PR. This research is justified because we believe that education is an instrument that helps in the understanding of man's relationship with the environment. Thus, the focus on a particular dynamic part of the world or even the society, by the provider of knowledge, compromises the quality of education. This research was conducted with nine collections of textbooks provided by the high schools of those cities. For this study tables that assisted in the analysis of the subject approach structure and also the temporal evolution of concepts were prepared. It could be seen that “greenhouse effect” concept is clearly explained in textbooks, but sometimes there is confusion with this with “global warming” concept, what is detrimental to the understanding of these phenomena. One could also see that the possibility of global warming occur due to natural causes is mentioned several times in the textbooks, and none of the analyzed books included the possibility of a cooling period due to geological cycles. These findings lead us to conclude that the catastrophic nature has great relevance in the works analyzed. |
