| Abstract | This study investigates the occurrence of navel ill in six dairy farms located in the municipalities of Castanhal and Aurora do Para, Para. Navel structures were examined by inspection and palpation of 225 calves aged from one day to three months. Those presenting changes in the navel were submitted to clinical analysis, which included observation of behaviour, body temperature, as well as cardiac and respiratory frequencies. Results revealed that 42,22% of animals had umbilical abnormalities, such as omphalitis (41,05%), omphalophlebitis (23,16%), umbilical hernia (14,74%), navel myiasis (10,53%), arterial and urachal inflammation (7,36%), and panvasculitis (3,16%). Epidemiological data indicated poor preventive measures that only consisted of cutting the navel, disinfecting the umbilical stump, and adequate intake of colostrum. Furthermore, reports showed that calves were kept in crowded and dirty enclosures most of the time. A diagnosis of neutrophilic leukocytosis was evidenced by hemograms performed in 72 animals with navel ill. Therefore, findings from our study proved navel infections to be of wide occurrence in the region investigated. |
