| Abstract | Recent changes that have global impact have deeply modified the relations between several regions of the planet, defining processes and establishing new agendas for investigation. This article is aimed to address these new dynamics, especially those that refer to the concept of peripheries (urban slums). When it comes to these urban “peripheries” or “peripheralization”, we refer to a broad set of phenomena that indicate, in most cases, social processes that generate inequality. Urban slums, spatial segregation and the formation of city networks are discussed here, suggesting new dynamics, both on the inter and intra-urban scales. Therefore, in a dynamics of global sociability, concepts such as borders and periphery are somewhat inapplicable. What boundaries can be established when there is simultaneously a local community, living their own vicissitudes and partaking in their cultures, and another one, a global community, that shares a way of life that is reproduced in other parts of the planet? How can there be a periphery when there is no center? |
