| Abstract | Because of its geographic situa- tion, historically there has been in the Ca- nary Islands a great interest in their environ- ment and the Prehispanic aboriginal popu- lation. During the 19th century controver- sies raged about the nature, origin and de- gree of cultural development of the so called "guanches" aboriginal peoples of the Islands. In this paper an analysis is made of the great role played in those studies by the lo- cal Scientific Societies, dedicated to the Natural and Human Sciences. At the end of the 19th century a noble and civilized ima- ge was constructed of the aborigines, which include the practice of some kind of wri- ting. This idea was a part of the general paradigm considered necessary for the crea- tion of a modern Canarian political iden- tity. |
