EnglishThe aim of the present study is to analyse the relationship between empathy and aggression in adolescents sentenced to custody for having committed one or more violent offences. At the same time, this study also examines whether empathy may function as a modulating factor of aggression in the most serious cases of aggressive adolescent population. The relationship between these variables and recidivism in the commission of violent offences is also analysed. The study sample consisted of 76 adolescents aged between 14 and 21 years, divided into two subgroups on the basis of their offending background, whether recidivists or not in violent offences. The results show that the subgroups do not differ significantly in the variables of aggression and empathy. On the other hand, a negative correlation, albeit weak, was found between physical aggression and the affective dimension of empathy. Finally, the importance of the results for the design of intervention programmes is analysed and future lines of research are suggested. |
