| Abstract | Introduction: Type 2 Diabetes (DM2) is one of the leading causes of death and morbidity worldwide. In the Ecuadorian coast the prevalence of Diabetes is of 6.1. Family support has been shown to have an impact on the patient's good metabolic control. Objective: To evaluate the influence of family support on the glycemic control of people with Type 2 Diabetes at the Santa Rita Health Center. Method: A cross-sectional study was performed. Participants responded to a sociodemographic survey and clinical parameters were collected. Glycemic control was determined with the value of glycated hemoglobin (A1c) = 7% and the family support was assessed with the "Instrument of evaluation of family support to the patient with Type 2 diabetes". Results: We studied 130 patients belonging to the diabetes club, 101 (78%) were women and the mean age (SD) was 58 (10) years. The median (P25P75) of years with the disease was 9 (6-16) years and that of A1c, 7.9 % (6.9-8.9). Of the total sample, 35 (27%) had controlled their glycemia and only 20 (16%) had high family support. Poor health perception (p = .003) and medium and low family support (p = .005) were associated with an increased likelihood of poor glycemic control. |
