| Abstract | The study of immigrants’ adaptation to host countries is a complex task that requires the consideration of multiple sociological issues encapsulated in the concept of acculturation. In the face of this, the decision to own a home involves a long-term perspective, associated with a wide array of determinants expressing the degree of success of immigration projects. Thus, this article uses homeownership in the host country to analyze the acculturation process of immigrants in Spain. We conclude that being foreign-born significantly reduces the likelihood of being a homeowner. Moreover, this feature represents the key variable explaining the significantly low homeownership rate exhibited among immigrants compared to natives in Spain. We argue that acculturation processes, when using the homeownership approach, rely on information-acquisition processes, which in turn present distinct patterns by immigrants’ region-of-origin.// El estudio de la adaptacion de los inmigrantes al pais de destino es una tarea compleja, que exige considerar multitud de aspectos expresados desde la perspectiva socioeconomica en el concepto de aculturacion. Frente a esto, la tenencia de vivienda en propiedad supone decisiones a largo plazo, vinculadas con un amplio conjunto de factores que para los inmigrantes expresan el exito de sus proyectos de inmigracion. Por ello, el articulo analiza los procesos de aculturacion de los inmigrantes residentes en Espana mediante el estudio de sus decisiones de tenencia de vivienda en propiedad. Se concluye que ser extranjero reduce notablemente la probabilidad de ser propietario, siendo la variable central que explica las menores tasas de propiedad de este grupo de personas en comparacion con los espanoles nativos. Los procesos de aculturacion de los inmigrantes, aproximados de esta forma, se basarian en los procesos de adquisicion de informacion, que presentarian diferencias relevantes en funcion de la etnia a la que pertenecen |
