| Abstract | Sporotrichosis is a mycosis that affects human beings and animals, caused by fungus of the Sporothrix spp. complex, which are widely distributed in nature, most in temperate and tropical climates. It belongs to risk group 2, capable of causing disease in humans or animals and which presents moderate individual risk and limited community risk. The infection can be acquired through traumatic implantation of the fungus on the skin and currently, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, there is an epidemic of this disease affecting humans, dogs and cats. The small animals veterinarian is part of this context, both as an occupational risk group and as a public health promoter and therefore must be well informed and updated about the disease and biosafety procedures. Because of the importance, this study was elaborated in order to assess the perception of small animal veterinarians from the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, regarding sporotrichosis and biosafety practices. An observational cross sectional study was conducted and the target population consisted of small animal veterinarians from Rio de Janeiro The instrument used was a semi-open questionnaire, self-administered, anonymous, specific to this study, which was allocated on a website (www.surveymonkey.com). The questions ranged socio-demographic and occupational characteristics; behaviors that affect infection control in the work environment; use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in several situations in clinical practice; knowledge related to sporotrichosis and waste management. With the results, it was observed that 72,9% of the veterinarians presented low risk perception, demonstrated by particular practices and the non-use of suitable protective equipment during implementation of some activities. Regarding sporotrichosis knowledge, the overall mean score was 58,7%, which was considered a poor performance, however, about the waste management, they presented a good performance |
