| Abstract | This thesis is about masculinity expressions produced in female bodies in the context of homoerotic relations in popular groups. It started with an ethnographic research that was accomplished from 2008 to 2010 in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre. The fieldwork was organized by the insertion of two lesbian activists relation networks and counted with the collaboration of 30 women, aged 25 to 64, mostly couples. Having collected this material, I describe masculinity as a body attribute of the women; however, it does not constitute an specific gender identity. Otherwise, masculinity expresses a particular articulation between sex and gender, which is materialized in the body through a male and female composition. The thesis is constructed on three basis. The first one concerns to the theoretical and methodological characterization of the gender variation, considering three different analytical possibilities presented by the literature about sexuality. The second one is based on the ethnographic reconstruction of three characters that were born in the period from the end of the 1940s and the beginning of the 1950s, whose trajectories illustrate transformations of the gender relations in the second half of the past century. In these narratives, sexuality comes up as a secondary element when the characters present themselves; it is always interlaced with the family and job domains. The third one is organized around the description of jeitão, emic category privileged by the interlocutors in order to establish a relation between the body contours and the sexual preference for women. This category articulates a set of affinities with specific work and sportive activities and masculinity expectations that are present in the marital and familiar arrangements. Finally, the claim of respect for this way of being indicates a mediation process between relational elements and aspects of individuality. |
