| Description | Journal: Journal of Physics C: Solid State Physics The generalised form of the classical Clausius-Mossotti relation of the dielectric constant for finite frequencies is derived using the inverse dielectric function formalism combined with the theory of the exciton. The random-phase approximation (RPA) or time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation (TDHFA), which are normally used, are bypassed by regarding the excitonic state as an exact one-particle excited state of the many-electron system. The dielectric function is then expressed by a formula which is similar to the Clausius-Mossotti relation of the classical dielectric theory. The finite spread of the electron-hole pair is taken into account through the modification of the dipole moment by the amplitude of the envelope function of the exciton. |
