| Description | There hasn't been a quarter century of progress in this area – in fact, it's only 10 years since the first (rudimentary) X-ray diffraction data from Langmuir monolayers were published (1,2). Given how commonly words implying knowledge of structure (“expanded liquid,” “condensed liquid,” “condensed solid,” etc.) were and still are used in the field, it may be surprising to realize that no one actually knew anything about Langmuir monolayer lattice structures until a decade ago, and that even today we know about only a handful of systems (most of the work has been done on “simple” saturated fatty acids and alcohols).
