| Description | The most fascinating point of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films is that they have an oriented layer structure at the molecular level. The molecules used in the LB method are amphiphilic molecules, and possess both hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties at the same time. The typical case is fatty acids, where a long alkyl chain and a carboxylic functional group correspond to the hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties, respectively. Although the LB method affords a nicely oriented layer structure, shortcomings of this method are that the resulting LB films are thermally and mechanically weak.
