| Description | The Upper Narrows Tunnel presents the most recent innovations in the evolution of highway tunneling technology in North America. Innovations include the use of shotcrete by itself as the tunnel final lining, the use of a spray-on membrane for water control, and escape adits for emergency egress. The spray-on membrane and shotcrete work well in combination for an economical and effective lining system. To further economize the lining, the contractor is allowed to use fiber reinforced concrete as an alternative to welded wire fabric. With this system, voids behind the lining are eliminated, negating the need for contact grouting. Although components of the final lining system have been used on other highway tunnels in North America, this is believed to be the first use of shotcrete by itself for a final lining, and the first use of a spray-on membrane as the primary means of water control in a highway tunnel.
