Design-build of a jet grout access shaft for tunnel rehabilitation

| Description | A design-build approach was used to construct a circular jet grout access shaft as part of the rehabilitation of the 75 year old primary water supply conduit for the City of Providence, Rhode Island. The shaft was needed over the cast-in-place portion to access the entire system for inspection and repairs. The conduit could only be accessed within the footprint of the City's settling basin. Following repairs to the conduit, the shaft would then serve as the excavation for a future valve structure. The circular jet grout shaft was selected for this project due to a number of unique and challenging constraints. Jet grout was used to form a circular cofferdam access shaft that did not require bracing, reducing the construction time substantially and allowing an unobstructed shaft for access to the tunnel. The jet grout wall formed a stable, erosion resistant surface capable of being disinfected quickly in the event the tunnel unexpectedly had to be put back into service. This paper discusses the planning, design and construction of the tunnel access shaft. The contracting mechanisms to allow the design-build to be completed are also described. The paper also details the performance of the jet grout system and the contingency measures that were in place to deal with problems. In addition to discussing the engineering challenges of the shaft design and construction, the paper details inspection and rehabilitation of the conduit using polymer modified cementitious mortar.
