| Description | The randomised control trial (RCT) design arguably is one of the most important methodological developments in medical research. The RCT evaluates treatments or interventions in an experimental setting that is under control of the investigator. Evaluation is achieved by comparing pre-specified trial outcomes between at least two treatment or intervention arms. The evidence from pragmatic RCTs often informs decisions about practice, which is why they are favoured in primary care research. Cluster randomised trials are particularly useful for primary care research where interventions are more likely to be under evaluation, rather than medications or individualised treatments. Included in the two types of RCTs are many different study designs. The most common RCTs are parallel group, crossover, factorial and cluster. Parallel groups trials are the most common design, with participants randomised either to the new treatment or intervention or to the control group. Book Name: How to Do Primary Care Research |
