| Description | Through an historical review of language development and planning in Australia, this chapter provides an account of how a multilingual population came to be governed by a “monolingual mindset” (Clyne, 2005). The consequences of this monolingual mindset are considered – who is disadvantaged by this positioning of language, and what are those disadvantages? The chapter closes with suggestions for a way forward through changing the way we teach children in schools. This chapter provides an account of how a multilingual population came to be governed by a monolingual mindset. Australia is a multicultural country. In the 1970s, Australia adopted an official multicultural policy that gave recognition to the many ethnic groups and languages in Australia. The chapter suggests that nurturing Australia's multilingualism through supporting its community languages would enhance social cohesion and improve English language learning outcomes. The many community language schools that currently operate with little or no connection to formal schooling could be better connected to school curricula. Any review of language planning and policy in Australia must include an account of changes in both multicultural policy and languages education in schools, as these are inextricably linked to the ways language are viewed and valued in Australia. Good "multilingual aware" teaching is informed by good curriculum. Book Name: Routledge international handbook of multicultural education research in Asia Pacific |
