In particular, it is argued that there remains a lack of discussion about the use of multicultural literature. On the one hand, some scholars adopted a maximalist stance that expanded multicultural literature to encompass all literature by and about the people constituting contemporary society. On the other hand, scholars adopting a minimalist position confine multicultural literature to the literature by and about people who are in minority positions, such as people of color and various immigrant populations. The chapter also explores the uncharted area of multicultural education through multicultural literature in the Korean primary schooling context, paying special attention to challenges and opportunities that arose. In addition, few multicultural education subjects are offered at pre-service education institutions as electives and few teachers have taken multicultural education training.
