| Abstract | The global immigration of people has increased the call by governments for multicultural education. Across the globe, in country after country, multicultural education has come to represent the theory and practice to teach majority and minority citizens and immigrants and to explore issues of policy and practice as it relates to: ethnicity, religion, gender, immigration, language, and race. This chapter is concerned with the approach to multicultural education that the South Korean government has employed to meet the needs of its people and those of immigrants and South Korean citizens. Using a framework of “politics of difference” and five different approaches of multicultural education discussed by Grant and Sleeter, the chapter examines how South Korea’s multicultural education policy treats newcomers as “different.” This chapter argues the significance of movement from a discourse about cultural difference to multicultural social justice education that challenge oppression and structural inequality and illuminates the politics of difference. This chapter examines how South Korea's multicultural education policy treats newcomers as different. Several scholars have developed approaches to multicultural education that address conceptual/theoretical meaning and practice. The global immigration of people has increased the call by governments for multicultural education. The politics of difference or the lack of inclusiveness is further exacerbated when children of immigrant workers are included in the multicultural education discourse. In Asian countries, multicultural education is thought about, talked about, and put into action in different ways. The South Korean government announced the transition to a multicultural and multi-ethnic society that included a movement to implement policies for multicultural families and children. Multicultural education policy is largely categorized by its main purposes and programs for students, teachers, and parents. The government's program continues to stress mentoring and after-school programs for multicultural family students and multicultural teacher education programs, parental education programs, and curriculum development programs. |
