| Description | This chapter presents a Director's Perspective on Titus Andronicus. At the Champlain Shakespeare Festival, it seemed clear to the director of Titus that William Shakespeare intended that the play should be produced with all the violence called for in the script. The world of Titus Andronicus as presented in the words of Shakespeare seemed to the director to become a nightmarish world for Titus when he found himself raising his great spear and striking his son Mutius dead. The actors, as well as the ideal setting and lighting by William M. Schenk, costumes by Julie Schwallow, and the props of Leon Martell were essential in bringing this ignored masterpiece of blood and gore to life upon a tiny stage in a theatre where the audience was frequently splattered by drops of stage blood. Robert Patterson as Saturninus, Jeanne DeBaer as Tamora, and Maxim Mazumdar as Aaron the Moor, brought truth and distinction to the production. Book Name: Titus Andronicus |
