| Description | Author was potentially hard-to-please audience in that and had seen three earlier productions of this daunting script and had done considerable reading about its stage history. Both for me and for most of the people I queried, this production was extremely powerful, for some even overwhelming. If one ranks productions by what percentage of the potential in the script is realized, Warner's Titus was one of the best Shakespeare shows I have seen in recent years. Indeed, some playgoers still feeling the impact of the show did not believe him when he told them that Peter Brook in 1955 had cut all of Marcus's 47-line speech. Trevor Nunn and John Barton had cut about half of it. What follows then, despite the appearance on the page, is a two-actor scene, wherein we see Marcus, step-by-step, use his logic. Titus often evokes laughter when he first chastises, then praises Marcus for killing the fly. Book Name: Titus Andronicus |
