| Description | We do not expect to solve the problems of uncomfortable conditions by natural means only. The environmental elements aiding us have their limits. But it is expected that the architect should build the shelter in such a way as to bring out the best of the natural possibilities. The quintessential step toward the design of the sustainable built environment is space heating and cooling by natural means, i.e., 'passive,' the term first introduced in the United States. Passive space heating may be defined as harnessing the thermal energy of the sun to heat the indoor environment. It may also be defined as the removal of excess heat from an indoor environment by utilizing the natural processes of disposing of thermal energy to a natural heat sink, namely the ambient air, the water, the ground, and the sky, when they are at a lower temperature, by convection, conduction, radiation, and/or evaporation. Hybrid cooling utilizes those same heat sinks, with the assistance of pumps or fans to circulate a heat transfer fluid, such as air or water between cooled space and the heat sink. These heat sinks are also the thermal dump for all active and mechanical cooling systems (Cook 1989). This chapter aims to present a qualitative and quantitative analysis of climate, comfort, and thermal behavior of building to develop passive, hybrid, and active thermal environment design strategies for a sustainable built environment. The solar control design is discussed as one of the important considerations of energy conservation. Book Name: Synergistic Design of Sustainable Built Environments |
