| Description | A well known American writer said once that, while everybody talks about the weather, nobody seems to do anything about it. Architects cannot wholly agree with the above quote (of Mark Twain) since architects can do a little about the immediate weather. The built environment and civilization has had quite an impact on the overall climate change. In many ways, the present energy crisis and climate change are compelling us to re-examine our past. Geographically, the climates are diverse, and hence the building professionals are required to describe and interpret climate in ways that are relevant to the built environment. The primary objectives of this chapter are to describe the characteristics of the earth and atmosphere, classify climate, and identify the specific elements of climate needed for the design of the built environment and to recommend forms and formats most useful for decision making. The chapter also describes solar geometry from the building design point of view. The other objective of the chapter is to delineate the conditions of thermal comfort for human occupancy.
