I wish I had more years left! In the design of new buildings and major renovations in existing buildings characterized by a long life span, the achievement of energy efficiency and the appreciation of finite resources will play a major role. The synergistic design of the sustainable built environment offers an opportunity to architect or designer to synthesize the potentials of passive design strategies with the low-energy and active design strategies – depending upon the climate and other site conditions – to meet occupants' comfort demand. Consequently, sustainable buildings need to combine energy efficiency and renewable energy generation such that they consume only as much energy as can be produced onsite through renewable resources over a specified period. There is a wide spectrum of alternatives for renewable energy integration in a sustainable built environment. The potential and suitability of any renewable energy system depend on the geographical, topographical, climate, site characteristics, and resources. This chapter aims to provide general guidance on renewable energy applications in the sustainable built environment both onsite and offsite at the neighborhood, district, and utility scale. The chapter starts with essential concepts of energy, forms, and sources of energy and covers a range of renewable energy applications – solar, wind, geothermal, hydrogen and fuel cell, biomass, and hydro.
