| Description | In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) has unfolded its huge capability to fabricate an object in remarkable ways, either created directly from Standard Tessellation Language (STL) files or using coordinate points and G-codes. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is a popular and low-cost process for AM. The commercial FFF software generates a toolpath according to selected parameters. Parameter selection is only limited to the number of variations such as raster angle, infill density, layer thickness toolpath pattern, etc. Although this limitation does not affect the properties of homogenous material, it fails to provide heterogeneity on a single layer which is desirable for the fabrication of functionally graded materials or structures. In AM certain techniques have been used in producing parts of various infill density. The optimization of the infill parameter and multi-contouring on a single layer gives a new method for fabricating heterogeneous structures using FFF. In this article a new approach has been used to obtain the density variation of human bone at its cross-section using a digital image processing technique. The developed algorithm is capable of extracting useful data from an image, based on the density variation of bone, and its variability is dependent on the value of grayscale for each pixel.
