| Description | Technological advancements and environmental concerns have been the driving forces for scientists and engineers to develop novel materials with tailored properties. Demand for such novel materials which are capable of meeting specific functional and performance requirements by accommodating themselves to the changes imposed by the physical environment is ever increasing. The advanced category of materials which exhibit multifunctional properties due to gradient compositional and structural change from surface to the interior known as functionally graded materials (FGMs) is gaining huge attention. Based on composition, processing parameters, and technique employed, the design and functioning of FGMs differ both internally and externally. Taking a cue from this the primary objective of this chapter is to provide a latest perspective on various gaseous phase processing techniques along with respective examples of FGM systems. Various technologies like thermal spray and vapor deposition techniques employed in the development of FGM with desired gradients are presented. Besides, this chapter covers numerical modeling, computational analysis, mechanical behavior, thermal behavior, and applications of FGM. Gaseous phases processing techniques for various applications ranging from extremely high-temperature thermal barrier functionally graded coatings to biomedical devices and bioactive coatings on implants are discussed in the present chapter.
