| Description | This chapter describes and presents mathematical modeling of commonly used mechanical energy-based non-traditional machining processes: ultrasonic machining (USM), abrasive jet machining (AJM), water jet machining (WJM), and abrasive water jet machining (AWJM). The USM process is explained and mathematically modeled for calculating the material removal rate (MRR) and the machining time. The AJM process is illustrated with reference to its advantages and the process parameters for achieving high MRR and a good surface finish. Additionally, the AJM is mathematically modeled for calculating MRR in both brittle and ductile materials. The WJM is explained with the aid of sketch and mathematical expressions for computing the water jet velocity, the mass flow rate, and the water jet impact force. The AWJM is discussed and analyzed for calculating the abrasive water jet velocity, the depth of penetration, and the surface roughness. This chapter contains 16 mathematical models, 13 worked examples, and 4 MCQs with answers. Book Name: Machining Processes and Machines |
