| Description | This chapter first emphasizes on the importance of the knowledge and the determination of cutting forces and power in machine shop practice, and then illustrates the various forces acting on workpiece, cutting tool, and chip during machining along with the experimental measurement of the cutting force F$ _{ c }$ and the thrust force F$ _{ t }$ by use of a dynamometer. The various forces in machining (the friction force F, the normal force N, the shear force F$ _{ s }$, and the normal to shear force, N$ _{ s }$) have been mathematically modeled, and the related problems have been solved. Besides the mathematical models, the graphical technique for determining F, N, F$ _{ s }$, and N$ _{ s }$ by using Merchant's force circle has been illustrated via a worked example. Power and energy in machining have been explained by numerically defining the terms: the cutting power, the gross motor power, the unit power (or the specific energy), the specific energy for friction, and the specific energy for shearing. This chapter contains 8 diagrams, 17 equations/formulae, 17 calculations/worked examples, and 8 MCQs with answers. Book Name: Machining Processes and Machines |
