| Description | Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) are environmentally friendly, nontoxic, nonflammable materials that do not pollute the air or produce wastewater during industrial processing. WPUs exhibit a reduced impact on the user and the environment due to the high quality of coatings compared to solvent-based coatings. Generally, polyurethanes are hydrophobic in nature and insoluble in water. Therefore, to disperse them in water, they are modified by either incorporating ionic groups or nonionic hydrophilic segments into the polymer structure. These are being employed in water-resistant, waterproof, and moisture permeable coatings and adhesives, with little or no co-solvent, that form films at ambient temperature. Owing to their diverse characteristics, WPUs are considered a green class of materials for a wide spectrum of applications, such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, adhesives, and coatings. The chapter addresses the synthesis of specific types of WPUs and their use in packing industries.
