| Description | “Belonging To, Belonging With, and the Right to Privacy” shows how feeling the right to privacy is not a given. When a person doesn't feel they belong to the family or to their mother, they can be so eager to be seen/known that they can reveal too much. This also works in the opposite direction, where a person can be too guarded/secretive. It's only when a person feels they really do belong that they're anchored enough to choose what they do or don't want to share. Feeling that one belongs—to Mom, to the family—helps firm boundaries in innumerable ways. To show how to help people who haven't grown up with a feeling of belonging, the paper is illustrated with two case examples. In the beginning there may be a feeling of merging (just as there is in human development). The goal is to help people move from a feeling of belonging to to a feeling of belonging with the analyst. It is only when people feel entitled to be themselves that they experience feeling fully alive. This includes having the right to privacy, boundaries, and being able to say “no.” Book Name: Belonging Through a Psychoanalytic Lens |
