| Description | Psychodynamic psychotherapy pays considerable attention to the variables of gender, sexual choice, race, ethnicity, and even transgender issues. Each has been thoughtfully investigated with much fruitful discussion. The same cannot be said for issues of “social class.” Until recently there has been almost a silence on this issue in our literature, at our conferences, and at our institutes of training. There are compelling reasons why we need to engage classism from a clinical, moral, and social perspective. Additionally, this chapter will explore why we have been so negligent in our treatment of the poor. I shall make the case that the above two issues are powerfully connected. What seems crucial is that, historically, class has often served as a moral designation of a person's value or worth. It is therefore highly personal. We cannot afford a psychodynamic approach that ignores it. My goal is to promote greater clarity around this important construct and to discuss why we as analysts have overlooked it for so long.
