| Description | In this chapter, the author describes his experience of belonging to the psychoanalytic society in which he trained and aspired to analyze and train others—only to be judged unacceptable as a training analyst. Protesting his rejection in person and having it heard helped him remain a member—until his offer to present his experience and what he had learned from it (including interpretations of “defenses against knowing and aggressive imagining”) for open discussion at a scientific meeting was declined as “not scientific enough” and “motivated by revenge.” At that point, he no longer wanted to belong to a club that still wanted him as a member. He was no longer willing to be “seen but not heard”—as his father had required of him as a child. That made it necessary to leave home in search of a more inclusive psychoanalytic society—which he has found in the field at large. Book Name: Belonging Through a Psychoanalytic Lens |
