| Description | Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the most common cause of severe and irreversible vision loss among people 50 years of age and older in many Western countries. The majority of available treatments for ARMD are intended for the late stage, specifically for choroidal neovascularization. Contradictory results have been published in studies with respect of prophylactic laser treatment for ARMD. Multiple studies have shown less progression to exudative ARMD and a better preservation of visual acuity after laser photocoagulation of soft drusen maculopathy. The Complications of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Prevention Trial is an large multicenter National Institutes of Health-sponsored, prospective clinical trial started in May 1999. Besides the primary endpoint, the investigators also looked at how laser treatment of drusen may affect the multifocal electroretinogram (ERG) and the choroidal blood flow. They have reported no significant difference in the multifocal ERG between treated and untreated eyes and a 24% increase in choroidal blood flow in treated eyes compared with untreated eyes.
