| Description | Degeneration is an acquired tissue change which is secondary to a variety of physical or environmental influences. Age-related macular degeneration is defined as macular changes associated with aging. Degenerative changes in the macula include drusen, pigmentation, atrophy and choroidal neovascularization with exudation and bleeding. Drusen is an ophthalmoscopic diagnosis of yellow spots in the retinal pigment epithelial basement membrane complex. Since the correlation between graders varied greatly, an attempt was made to computerize the recognition and analysis of the drusen-containing area. The grading system becomes slightly more complex but more arbitrary in a transition from qualitative to quantitative methods. The Wisconsin classification is the most comprehensive and reproducible system currently available. However, it is still semi-quantitative, thus leaving gaps for estimation and inter-observer variability. This complicated grading should be done by experienced graders in one center where the margin of disagreement is rather low. Book Name: NUTRITIONAL and ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES on the EYE |
