| Description | This book illustrates the increasing concern about the international labour standards issue. At national levels and in international organizations, policies have been developed to address this concern. However important these developments have been, they have not led to a new regime on labour standards and trade that would make labour standards trade-enforceable (a social clause). The two organizations from which such a regime might have emerged – the ILO and the WTO – chose not to do so. Within the WTO, labour standards have not become a part of its policy, despite the fact that they are sometimes included in the trade policy reviews. The ILO has chosen not to promote the enforcement of core labour standards by means of trade sanctions. Book Name: Trade Unions and Global Governance |
