| Description | In this chapter, we give a detailed discussion of a simulation solution for a realistic optimization problem. The problem we have chosen involves a transportation system, an area of much current interest, and one where analytic solutions are often not available for the most interesting measures of performance such as cost. To focus on the simulation's design, analysis, and programming (rather than on the details of the problem), we have simplified the real-world problem. It should be clear to the reader, however, how to add more complex cost measures, as well as more real-world complexities, such as time delays, breakdowns, and the like; some additional complexities are considered in the code of Section 8.4.
