| Description | Aconite is reputed as queen of poisons and is revered for its anti-inflammatory properties in traditional systems of medicine (TSMs), despite its fatal toxic attributes. Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) use different species of the aconitum genus for their therapeutic benefits and treatment of various ailments. Several species of the aconitum genus are listed as critically endangered species, by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The preparation methods for roots of aconitum play a critical role in altering the chemistry of alkaloids and toxicity effects of the prepared drug. Ayurveda and TCM have preparation methods that vary on the type of solvents and temperatures used for preparation of the processed drug from the raw roots. There are several case reports published till date that emphasize on the toxicity of aconite caused due to inadequate or improper processing of the drug. Despite the toxicity, aconite forms an important pillar of TSMs for its excellent therapeutic activity in treatment of rheumatalgia, severe generalized pain, menorrhagia, and cold. The present chapter focuses on the overview of ethnopharmacology, toxicity, chemistry, as well as applications and formulations of aconite in various TSMs. Book Name: Assessment of Medicinal Plants for Human Health |
