| Description | The indigenous communities ofGilgit-Baltistan rely on local medicinal plant species in their Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) of traditional medicinal systems. Factors like subsistence agriculture, food insecurity, and lack of access to modern medicinal facilities have forced these communities to rely on the locally available and traditionally recognized therapies and treatments through medicinal plants. Archaeological studies reveal that the region remained under the influence of incursions from the Indian subcontinent, China, Scythia, Transoxiana, and Ancient Greek, amongst others. Such influences introduced Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, Unani, and Tibetan medicinal systems to the local communities. The Hunza and Nagar districts are highly influenced by TCM, while Skardu, Astore, and Ghanche are inclined toward the Ayurveda and Unani medicinal systems. With the passage of time and interaction of different ethnic groups, these systems have merged and prevail in a mixed form. The older community members and traditional health practitioners (THPs) retain most of the existing TEK, while the younger generation, especially those involved with collection and trade of these resources, are also keen observers of this knowledge. Better collection and marketing facilities will contribute to the conservation of medicinal plant resources and their knowledge transfer from the older generations to the youth.
