| Description | Waste remediation has gained global attention in the last few decades. Identification of technologies for the conversion of waste to revenue is imperative for developing nations as the cost involved in waste treatment is a crucial economic concern. The sources of waste could range from plants and animals to the agricultural, industrial, and household effluents. Thus, the objective of this chapter is to review various low-cost technologies that could efficiently utilise waste and convert them to profit-earning products. Energy generation from waste is a promising outcome of waste treatment. COD capture has been one such strategy where the process is made energy efficient by reducing the overall energy required for treatment of waste. The potential of different microorganisms for production of bioenergy can be a feasible alternative due to their capability of utilising nitrogen compounds, VFAs, textile dyes, and pharmaceutical components. This can also meet the issue related to depletion of fossil fuels. The present study aims to focus on strategies of energy generation from waste using algae that could improve the economic condition of low-income countries.
