| Description | Subsurface contamination is a serious environmental hazard. Some examples to the sources of subsurface contamination are gasoline, diesel fuel, petrol, oil refineries, and underground storage tanks (USTs). These hazardous contaminants are on the EPA's priority pollutants lists. Besides, some chemicals in the fossil fuels persist in the environment for a long time. These contaminants pose health risks to living organisms. Therefore, this threat needs to be removed carefully from the subsurface environment. Removal of contaminants, especially petroleum-based hydrocarbons, from soil and groundwater through bioremediation technologies has been commonly practised by researchers and industry. Bioremediation technologies are called in-situ and ex-situ based on their location. Some of these technologies are phytoremediation, biostimulation, bioaugmentation, bioventing, biosparging, and composting. This chapter investigates these remediation technologies based on their effectiveness, applicability, advantages, and disadvantages.
