| Description | Stable isotopes have been widely used in studies of calcium metabolism in children and adults. Unlike radioactive isotopes, they are completely safe for human use, and studies may be performed in subjects of all ages (2). We and others have used calcium stable isotopes to measure indices of mineral balance and kinetics, including calcium absorption, endogenous fecal calcium excretion, and bone formation/resorption rate. The methods for these studies have been extensively reviewed ( 1–3 , 16 ). In this report we will discuss the relationship between stable/radioactive calcium isotope data and traditional mass balance measures of mineral absorption and excretion.
