| Description | Body iron balance is normally maintained by regulation of intestinal iron absorption ( 24 ), and it is thought that this control is mediated at the level of the intestinal mucosa ( 2 , 25 , 26 ). Previous studies have demonstrated that the key steps of mucosal iron transport are: 1) uptake of iron by the brush border of the mucosal epithelium, and either 2) transfer of this mucosal iron to the plasma or 3) retention in a mucosal storage pool ( 5 , 6 , 37 ); iron sequestered in this storage pool (presumably in the form of ferritin) subsequently is removed from the body during exfoliation of the mucosal epithelial cells. Knowledge is incomplete, however, about the ways in which these individual steps are modulated under various conditions in order to control net iron absorption.
