| Description | This chapter considers the central organizing principles of what many people might consider to be “good” journalism. These are truth, objectivity, neutrality, and balance. The chapter argues that while these might be generally indicative of “quality” reporting that enhances the democratic process, these principles are no longer fixed and are subject to change. A modern, global media landscape embraces different levels of journalistic freedom and regulation, a redefinition of “truth”, considerable technological advancement, some new and challenging issues, and a range of news platforms that are incompatible with each other in specific areas. Journalists, editors, the organizations who employ them, the institutions that regulate them, the publics who consume their output, and the manufacturers facilitating it have all contributed to this state of flux. Accordingly, it is no surprise that these traditional and established tenets of news reporting are dynamic and problematized. This chapter suggests, in the meantime amid such uncertainty, another journalistic concept – transparency – might provide a good “holding” principle to help maintain the quality of the news that we all consume.
