| Description | Throughout this book, we have emphasised that what makes social work distinctive in the mental health field is its focus on the social context and social consequences of mental illness and the advancement of social justice, and we have drawn out the implications for a critical approach to the work that is fully engaged with consumers and their families. In this final chapter, we focus on what might sustain and nourish work of this kind. We want to acknowledge just how challenging social work mental health practice can be. We will discuss here the organisational environment of mental health social work and seek to emphasise some of the factors that might sustain us individually and collectively: clarity of purpose, applying the principles of relationship-based practices in organisations and service networks, an ethical commitment to social justice in the mental health field and a commitment to the active improvement of services. We conclude with a discussion of competence and expertise in this field, and we suggest the kinds of supervision and professional development that support the growth of competence.
