Abstract	The design of polymers and oligomers that mimic the complexstructures and remarkable biological properties of proteins is animportant endeavor with both fundamental and practical implications.Recently, a number of nonnatural peptides with designed sequences havebeen elaborated to provide biologically active structures; inparticular, facially amphiphilic peptides built from β-amino acidshave been shown to mimic both the structures as well as the biologicalfunction of natural antimicrobial peptides such as magainins andcecropins. However, these natural peptides as well as theirβ-peptide analogues are expensive to prepare and difficult to produceon a large scale, limiting their potential use to certainpharmaceutical applications. We therefore have designed a series offacially amphiphilic arylamide polymers that capture the physical andbiological properties of this class of antimicrobial peptides, but areeasy to prepare from inexpensive monomers. The design process was aidedby molecular calculations with density functionaltheory-computed torsional potentials. This new class ofamphiphilic polymers may be applied in situations where inexpensiveantimicrobial agents are required.
