Abstract	Tout comme les autres actifs physiques, les écosystèmes génèrent un flux de services au fil du temps et le capital qu’ils représentent peut demeurer intact si ces services sont consommés de façon durable. Qui plus est, tout écosystème tend à offrir de nombreux services de ce type. Ce chapitre analyse les écosystèmes sous cet angle multifonctionnel, en établissant une nette distinction entre la valeur totale de l’actif que constitue l’écosystème considéré et celle des variations de faible envergure ou de nature discrète du flux de services qu’il fournit. Les problèmes d’estimation de la valeur sont illustrés par référence aux bénéfices controversés que procurent les écosystèmes en tant qu’ils constituent une précieuse source de matériel génétique pour la recherche pharmaceutique.
