Abstract	With the help of distance education, a university can enhance all phases of its relationship with knowledge seekers. The educational mission makes it possible for such universities using distance education to determine not only when opportunities exist for strategic applications, but also what specific applications should be developed. In this research we use MIT's mission statement, “advance knowledge and educate students”, to illustrate how strategic distance education systems can be analyzed and designed.
