Abstract	Neuroengineering is a new, exciting, challenging, and multidisciplinary field of research that employs the latest engineering technologies to address problems that have a neuroscientific basis. In order to more quickly make progress in neuroengineering research, efforts beyond the teaming of experts and laboratories that specialize in engineering and neuroscience are necessary. Specifically, researchers with a non-traditional background that combines neuroscience and selected fields of engineering could make major contributions. At UCLA we have developed a research and training program targeted at developing such individuals. Students with training in neuroengineering are at ease with the technical engineering and neuroscience aspects of neuroengineering research. Such familiarity with the material involved and a view of the larger issues, the neuroengineer is well positioned to make the necessary leaps in thought and perspective to address complex and yet extremely valuable neuroengineering research.
